Highway 9

Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:27

After our journey down Highway 59 yielded some truly impressive fare, we decided to take another trip, this time to the sandy beaches of Gimli in the heart of the Interlake. One crisp spring morning, we loaded up the car with sunscreen, a camera and our appetites, and hit Highway 9 in search of the places that make our province so special.

Just past the city in St. Andrews lies the Captain Kennedy Museum and Maple Grove Tea Room. Built in 1866 by explorer Captain William Kennedy, this must-see heritage point features a patio and glassed-in sunroom overlooking the river and manicured grounds, where you can enjoy a light lunch, tea and homemade desserts. Turn right off Highway 9 onto River Road. Continue for about eight minutes until you see a large house with a long white picket fence on your right-hand side.

Highway 59

We go in search of locally produced culinary gems right in our own backyard.

Before leaving the city limits, a stop at one of the BC Fruit Trucks is a must for some enroute snacking. While these white trucks can be spotted across the city, you’ll find two just off 59—near Spring Hill and in the parking lot of the Fifty-Niner Motel close to Birds Hill Park. The trucks’ appearance often marks the beginning of cottage season. They’re great for fresh summer fruits, including local strawberries and wild blueberries, and even better for letting you sample their wares before buying.
